Head in the Clouds

You are going to come across people in this life who do not believe in you. And there are going to be many of them.

But they are not you, and you do not have to believe them. Lofty ambitions are what we should all be dreaming. Our aspirations will turn into actuality if we put in the time and dedication and never lose sense of that feeling that our heads are up somewhere in the clouds. Yet, to achieve our dreams and our desired future, we must accept our nightmares, our past and its inevitable failures.

Someone recently told me, “I question people who bring their past with them into the present.” Well, I question this statement. All of the fleeting moments, the questions, the mistakes, the triumphs, the tears, the thoughts, the actions, the pile-ups of seemingly insignificant seconds, affect everything that we do now in our present lives. Our past shapes us. Just as our present will soon be our past and these moments, too, will carry weight with us into the ever ominous future. Through it all, our selves will continue to evolve.

You are never going to be perfect, and perfect is not something to strive to be, because the quirkiness is a huge factor in our beauty. You are going to make mistakes. You are going to, at one time, say the wrong thing to the wrong person, just as you once remember someone, at one time, saying and doing the wrong thing to you. You are going to learn from every pitfall and every pitfall is going to feel smaller in significance when you move onto life’s next learning experience and attempt to tackle the next hurdle. You are going to question–question both other people’s motives and your own, because every day is going to bring a new message, a new conquest, to the forefront of your mind, and all at once, those motives and everything you thought you had figured out the day before, everything you thought you knew, will seem to at once evaporate and evolve as it morphs into something else entirely. Something new worth chasing. Worth pursuing.

Live for now. Lead in love. Stop running. Your past does not define you, but it is a part of you, and you should never be scared of it. It’s what got you here, and it’s what will help get you to tomorrow. And here is pretty great. And tomorrow may be even better. And the future is not so ominous when you realize the foundation has been there all along.

“You spend your whole life stuck in the labyrinth, thinking about how you’ll escape one day, and how awesome it will be, and imagining that future keeps you going, but you never do it. You just use the future to escape the present.” ~ John Green
